Nigeria Commission Reviews Key Findings and Recommendations, Plans for Dissemination of Final Report

The Nigeria NCDI Poverty Commission met for the fourth time on 9 November. The Commission reviewed and reached consensus on key findings and recommendations from its situation analysis and priority-setting exercise and deliberated on plans for dissemination of its final report.

The meeting was attended by 12 Commission members, including Commission Chair Dr. M O Alex-Okoh of the Federal Ministry of Health, who delivered welcoming remarks to open the session, and Co-Chair Dr. Kelechi Ohiri of the Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF), who provided closing remarks.

During the meeting Commissioners reviewed and validated key findings and recommendations from the situation analysis and priority-setting exercise, recommended some additions and revisions to be incorporated into the final report, and discussed and approved plans to disseminate the report.

The meeting included an overview of the results of the priority-setting exercise, which designated 31 priority NCDI conditions and a total of 139 health-sector interventions, as well as a presentation on the financial implications of implementing the prioritized interventions. These presentations were followed by group discussion to reach a consensus on the list of priority conditions and interventions.

The Nigeria Commission’s next steps are to incorporate the recommendations collected during the meeting into the Commission report ahead of its approval and dissemination.

The Nigeria Commission’s Phase 2 work will begin next year and will include research to: assess the current delivery of prioritized interventions; develop recommendations on integrated delivery models for NCDI conditions for chronic care, acute care, and advanced women’s health packages; and understand how integrated care can accelerate progress towards universal health coverage, particularly for NCDIs.
