Mozambique Celebrates Dr. Ana Mocumbi’s Outstanding Contributions to Science
Dr. Eduardo Samo Gudo, director general of the National Institute of Health of Mozambique, and Dr. Ana Mocumbi, co-chair of the NCDI Poverty Network, each hold the Medal of Merit for Science and Technology bestowed upon them by the Republic of Mozambique.
Dr. Ana Mocumbi, co-chair of the NCDI Poverty Network, recently received the Republic of Mozambique’s Medal of Merit for Science and Technology. The honor recognizes her outstanding contributions to science, technology, and innovation in Mozambique.
Vicente Joaquim, secretary of state for the City of Maputo, conferred her medal as part of celebrations marking Mozambique’s 50th anniversary of national independence. Dr. Eduardo Samo Gudo, director general of the National Institute of Health of Mozambique, also received the honor.
A cardiologist, Dr. Mocumbi serves on the faculty of Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo. Along with Dr. Gene Bukhman, who shares her leadership of the NCDI Poverty Network, she served as a co-chair of the 1996–2020 Lancet Commission on Reframing Noncommunicable Disease and Injuries for the Poorest Billion, which led to the creation of the Network.
Dr. Mocumbi earned her medical degree at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and her doctorate at the Imperial College London, where she investigated the epidemiology of neglected cardiovascular diseases.
She is involved in several local and international research projects and partnerships, including international registries, clinical trials, and health systems research. She is editor of the Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy Journal and has published original papers in peer-reviewed journals and didactic publications.
Dr. Mocumbi also serves as vice president of the Pan African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) South Region, a co-leader of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute for the Sub-Saharan Region, and a member of the World Heart Federation’s Scientific Policy and Advocacy Committee.
