Emmanuella Selasi Hormenoo
Type 1 Diabetes Warrior from Ghana
Emmanuella Selasi Hormenoo, a diabetes and adolescent health advocate and a peer mentor with several years of lived experience with type 1 diabetes, serves as the General Secretary for Diabetes Youth Care in Ghana.
Hormenoo has been invited as a speaker on many national and international panels, including those organized by the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa and the Pediatric Association of Ghana, and, most recently, at the World Health Summit. In her presentations, she often uses her own experiences to illustrate the negative consequences of stereotypes and myths surrounding diabetes.
Hormenoo’s advocacy also includes collaborations with multiple nongovernmental organizations to spread awareness on mental health, screening, and educating adolescents on noncommunicable diseases. In addition, she conducts regular psychosocial support to more than 50 people living with type 1 diabetes in Ghana.
Since joining the NCDI Poverty Network’s Voices for PEN-Plus program in April, Hormenoo has been actively involved in the Network’s advocacy efforts.
